AnimeNEXT 2005

Don't remember the hours, sorry!

Hino Rei High School Uniform

Trying to get to Seacaucus on Saturday was like a comedy of errors. For one thing, the MTA (New York City's transit system, for you out-of-towners), sucks BALLS on the weekends. No trains run their scheduled routes, and good luck trying to find signs telling you where, exactly, you'll be let off. It took me over an hour to get to Manhattan, and I ended up having to walk a good ten blocks to get to the Port Authority.

DJ Ranma S as...some guy from Naruto, I forget.

Luckily, then taking the bus (run by NJ transit, so on a completely different system) was as easy as pie. Of course, I was hours later than I had anticipated by then, so I got a lot of phone calls and text messages on my cell going, "OMG WHERE R U?" I felt so badly about that! But after getting off of the bus I managed to find the con with no trouble--primarily because the first people I saw were a vision in yellow, Callie dressed up as Princess Venus, and David Ng photographing her! Those photos (and other Sailor Senshi specific ones) can all be found on my Sailor Moon cosplay site, Sailor Moon Avatars. I also saw Renee, and almost didn't recognize her! That's the danger of being a really good cosplayer...it's really hard to remember what someone looks like when they're a different person every day!

Some guy from Naruto doing...some thing from Naruto!

David was kind enough to help me find the registration line...which was SO short! (He also gave me a souvenier from Kyoto, how sweet is that!) At any rate, what a difference compared to last year! Maybe getting there late (and NOT pre-registering) is the smart thing to do after all! Right away I saw that B-chan was on staff, and sitting (dressed gorgeously, as usual!) in a booth to help "check" people in (I don't know what they call it), and as I was waiting for a ton of people I wanted to meet up with, I decided that was the best place to scope them out! B-chan is always fun to sit and talk with, magically produced water for me when I was about to die (it was pretty hot), and introduced me to new people left and right. We had so much fun!

Andrea as a very pretty bride (I forget what character though, sorry!)
And I met up with so many of my friends that way! First off was Kayla, and I do believe it was our first time meeting in person after months of talking online! We had so much fun, she's so hyper. And I got to meet the great, all-powerful, ever-knowing Dr. Teng for the first time, and he is SO sweet, and so talented! I promise you better photos the next time we're at a con! (Somehow, I kept making his camera go out of focus. Maybe it's a smart camera who knows which ladies need "soft focus" to look good!) Of course I ran into Ranma, who's been at every con I've ever been to, EVER, and about ten million more besides. He also had a giftie for me, a poster of Revolutionary Boy Touga (which he picked because he knew I was prodding Louis into being my Touga for Otakon this year) which was just too cute! I also got to meet JJ for the first time, who nearly frightened me to death with her awesome red eyes, but she looked great!
Kaine Maxwell as Cid from FFVI.
I also ran into people I hadn't seen for almost a year already! I got to see Byron, who looked really great as a pirate from One Piece (I don't watch One Piece, so I don't know which one, sorry!), and Kaine Maxwell, who was such a great Cid from Final Fantasy VI, and Carrie, who seems determined to cosplay every sexy female from all of the Final Fantasy games so well that no other cosplayer wants to attempt them ever again. :) I also saw Usagi Kou for the first time in months, and between her dark hair and her tan, I didn't recognize her! You can see my shocked expression in some of the photos below as it dawned on me who was jumping on me. :) But whether she has dark hair or light, tan skin or pale, she's always stunning!

Carrie as Rinoa from FFVIII.

I also ran into Setsuna Meioh, who was debuting the secret costume she had been working on for months--a rare Usagi ballgown from the first artbook! I recognized it right away, and she looked so beautiful, she was really breathtaking. She also introduced me to Endymion-sama, who is just so nice and so gallant, he really makes the perfect Endymion. I didn't get to see much of Linwood, because he was working staff, and doing a really excellent job, so he was really busy, but I understand. At least I got to say hi for a minute!

DJ Ranma S as Naval Barret from FFVII.

I was also calling Usagi Seion about every ten minutes, not only because I wanted to get some school girl pics with her (and our other senshi friends) later on that day, but because I had her belated birthday present. However, it seems to me that all Usagis seem to pick up Usagi traits while in costume, so she was late. No...wait. Usagi Seion is ALWAYS late. ALWAYS. (Ask her non-cosplay friends. It's true!)

"Happy Birthday!"

I was also waiting for my friend Skye and her boyfriend Knight, as they were coming from New Jersey, but I think they were having trouble finding the place, or they hit traffic, or something. It was Skye's first anime convention (at least in costume), so I really wanted to meet her as soon as she got in, and show her around. (And show her off to all of my friends!)

Group hug!

Usagi Seion FINALLY arrived, and someone grabbed my camera (B-chan, was it you? I forget now) and was able to get a shot of her face as she saw her present--a T-shirt with pink sleeves, a pink heart in rhinestones, and the name "USAGI" in rhinestones. She was so stunned she literally started shaking, and then jumped into my arms. I love reactions like that. I really do. :) Then Carrie jumped in on the hug. How many other people got group hugs with gorgeous girls that weekend? Show of hands.

I loves me some Silent Bob cosplayers!

Usagi Seion and Callie went off to find Mamoru-san and get a photoshoot going, and I settled back to wait for Skye some more. I had a chance to photograph quite a few people--I really was in the best spot, everyone had to pass by me!

I even ended up seeing Krystal again--I didn't even know she was going to be there! (For the record, we met for the first time at AnimeNEXT last year--after a good five years or so of talking online!) She had a crystal ball with her (with a glowstick in the middle, how cool!) and was wowing all the girlies with her contact juggling skills (that thing that Jareth does in Labyrinth, where you pass a ball from hand to hand smoothly.)

Krystal!

Eventually Skye and Knight got there, I introduced her to whoever happened to be around, and we went into the dealer's room.

Honestly, I wasn't all THAT impressed with the dealer's room. I didn't see anything I really flipped over for myself. I wanted to get Lou a Domo-kun T-shirt, but there was one at every table, and they were all different (and some of them were clearly girls' t-shirts), so I wanted to shop around before settling on anything. There wasn't that much Sailor Moon merchandise, but I guess that's no one's fault--Sailor Moon is actually pretty old by now, by anime standards, so there aren't going to be too many new things coming out for it.

Awesome Solid Snake and Eva from Metal Gear Solid 3.

Of course I ended up stopping every few feet to photograph the excellent cosplayers I saw--and my friends. I ran into Femmy and her boyfriend Alan around this time, and she looked GORGEOUS--such a tiny, delicate, and pretty Princess Saturn! She, Callie, and Usagi Seion looked so good together, I wished I had my princess dress (and I wished it still fit--see my Cosplay Formal 2005 report for THAT list of complaints.) But it was fun just to see them.

The artist's alley was actually surprisingly good--personally, I would almost never pay for someone else's fanart (especially not $30 and upwards) but that's mainly because I attempt to draw my own. The level of talent there was incredibly striking, and I think a lot of pieces sold very fast.

Three pretty princesses!

I also saw JenyBean and her friend Jess at this point. They need to start cosplaying again, because they are just TOO BEAUTIFUL! The world always needs more beautiful girls in costumes. :) I also think they should both have their own booth at the artist's alley, they're both incredibly talented artists.

I can't remember whether Doc the Stampede found me, or I found him, but we were glad to see each other! He had just gotten a new camera (or was it new camera equipment? I forget) and he was really looking forward to breaking it in, and so was I! I can't believe what great photos it takes--you can see every stitch of my collar in the shot he took! (It's on my Hino Rei School Uniform page, if you're interested.) He also got a great shot of me and Usagi Seion together.

An awesome EGL dress, and two great Utena cosplayers.

I also got to meet another long-term online friend, Brandon AKA Commander Havok. He's a friend of Krystal's (in fact, I'm sure that's how we were introduced) that I had been talking to for nearly as long as I've talked to Krystal. I can't believe he came all the way up to New Jersey! Skye and Knight were pretty hungry and tired after going through the dealer's room once (which was also very crowded) and the four of us sat down to grab some food.

I believe she's Primera from Magic Knight Rayearth.

I have only one real complaint about the dealer's room--it was a huge space that had to share with the panels. The panels were only separated by those black cloth walls on wheels, that certainly do not reach up all the way to the ceiling, and the panelists have microphones, which makes sense in one way, because you want the attendees to be able to hear you, but doesn't make sense with the absence of walls, because that means you had a lot of voices competing and getting confused. Oh, well. I don't go to panels anyway, and cons are always noisy.

Commander Havok and I!

I was able to pop my head in for a bit by the masquerade sign up (which I wouldn't be staying for) so I could say hello to Sailor Mo, who was in charge of the masq this year. Of course, she looked a little bit stressed--who can blame her? Masquerades are ALWAYS a chore to put on, and working con staff in any capacity is usually a tiring and thankless job. Luckily she had Krystal there with her, giving her shoulder massages and just generally keeping her sane--if it were me, I probably would've been going postal with an AK47 by then.

Krystal's seduction techniques.

Around this time I ran into Avian Firefly! We've bumped into each other at cons before, but usually one of us is on our way somewhere else at the time, so we've only ever had time to snap one or two photos before having to rush off. But this time she was debuting her Kozue from Utena school uniform, which she had made for our planned Utena group for Otakon this year, and neither of us were in a rush, so we really just got to sit down, chat, and take a few photos together just for the fun of it. Lovely!

She was with Mamoru-san, too, so I got a silly shot with him that I've been wanting for a while. (But it's still not the "step on Rei's head" photo! We still need to do that one at some point.) He did his usual hysterical Christopher Walken impression, and I was really beginning to tally up stories to tease Lou with when I got home.

Vash and a girl version of the Kuroneko! She's got a red glittery "tattoo" of Vash's face!

I would really have liked to have gone to Oshidori's EGL NY panel, as she had worked her ass off for weeks getting her original designs ready for her fashion show. I didn't even get to see the outfits until the next week, but they looked AMAZING. Someday Oshi really is going to have her own clothing line, and I'll be able to say "I knew her when", and I'll gladly hand over fistfuls of money to be able to wear her outfits. They're really that good--you just wait and see!

Do you know what the sticker says? DRAMA FREE ZONE.

As we were leaving the dealer's room, I finally found Jamie, who I also had a belated birthday gift for, and I think it was the first time I really got to talk to her boyfriend George, who is so nice! Jamie and I really need to hang out more in person, she and George are so much fun and we all have so much in common. Anyway, she looked great as a very tiny Sailor Galaxia (it's a shame that she's so cute, in a way, because sometimes she doesn't look very villainous!) and I got some great pictures of her.

You don't know what this photo means to me.

I also got a picture of my two Sailor Moons together--Usagi Seion, and Usagi Kou. I really can't tell you why they're both so important to me. I mean, I could tell you that Usagi Seion is the person who introduced me to Sailor Moon, and I could tell you that Usagi Kou has been the princess I've cosplayed with since my first anime con EVER, but you know, that's really only the tip of the iceberg.

Just take my word for it that they're both wonderful girls who have been there for me for years, and inspire me to try my best, and make this hobby so special for me, and we'll leave it at that.

See? Girls CAN get along.

Really, after that, there was little else to do. The con wasn't that big. Skye, Knight, Brandon and I went outside to relax for a bit, because my feet were starting to hurt (even though I was wearing flat shoes!) so I only spent a few more hours doing that, chatting, calling out to people, and taking a few more photos outside. I wasn't going to stay at the con that night (as the next day was Father's Day) so I ended up going home while it was still light out. I was sorry to leave early, though, as I had a wonderful time seeing all of my wonderful friends.

Luigi!
