April O'Neil

"This is great! I must really be on to something hot if they're trying to kill me!"

April O'Neil

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987 cartoon)

Made by: Licensed costume

Appeared: New York Comic Con 2023

Status: Active

Like most kids born in the 1980s, I grew up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I think I ate nothing but pizza for lunch for a solid year in 1990. And while Raphael is my favorite character (naturally; he is the best turtle), when I was looking for a fun nostagic costume to do, I wasn't quite ready to make the leap to crossplaying mascot suit, so April O'Neil made a lot more sense. Now between you, me, and the lamppost, I prefer the first live-action movie over the cartoon, but April's yellow jumpsuit is just so iconic. And I certainly did spend my share of Saturday mornings watching the cartoon on T.V.

I didn't want to stress over this costume so much, so the jumpsuit and wig are from Amazon, and the boots are my old Meryl Stryfe boots. I spent way too long fiddling with my grandfather's old camcorder to get it to work again, only for it to fail me the day of the con. (How neat would VHS con footage have been?) But the real pièce de résistance was when I convinced Pete he should cosplay Casey Jones with me. Having one of my best friends dress up as a hot-headed maniac with a with a penchant for violence just felt right somehow.
