New York Comic Con 2009

February 6 - 8

Day One

Okay, so, here's the deal: I was recently laid off from my old job of five years, and have started a new job, so as The New Girl, I don't have a lot of time I can take off. And it's "only" a comic con, you know? Anime's more my thing. So, I decided I wasn't going to take Friday off. Louis was, and I figured, that was enough--he'd have time to do some shopping without me tagging along and distracting him.

We had also agreed that out of the three days we were planning on going to the con, I would only cosplay one day--it's hard enough to shop in the crowded, shoulder-to-shoulder mob of the dealer's room (or, "Exhibition Hall", as I believe it's called there); it's impossible when you're being stopped every five minutes for a photo.

I apologize. Since I was only there for about a half an hour, the only pictures I have from Friday are the ones my friend MadMisterSmiley took when I arrived.

I didn't, however, want to go there in my every day clothes. What's the fun in that? I'm always looking to take pictures with my friend Skye, so she and I agreed to wear similar, punk-ish looking outfits, her in white and black, me in red and black. We didn't QUITE coordinate perfectly; I never did find black and red Tripp pants in my size, and I forgot to tell her to wear her white and black armbands, but I think we looked pretty adorable anyway.

So, what did I do at the con? Well, I got there at around 6 PM or so. I texted Skye and Louis to meet me at the entrance, as well as my friend MadMisterSmiley who I knew would have a camera in tow. Louis had grabbed me a badge protector, so I was able to be ready to go in right away. MMSmiley snapped some pictures, and then headed out, as he was going out to dinner with friends and had only waited around to say hi to me before he left.

So they're all just going to be of me and my friend Skye.

We were planning on going to see Coraline at 8 ourselves, and we wanted to grab some dinner before then, so we really only had about a half an hour to kill--so what was the ONE thing I definitely wanted to do at the con? It didn't take me long to decide--meet Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade!

Lou had already met them earlier that day--he had printed out his favorite strip and had them sign it, asked for a sketch, and bought a poster. So he knew exactly where to lead us.

Skye. And me.

On the way, we spotted a really awesome Casey Jones cosplayer, and I felt bad that we weren't able to ask him where he got his mask (which was perfect), as Louis and I have talked about maybe doing April O'Neil and Casey Jones costumes together. But as we got to the Penny Arcade booth, we saw him again, with my friend Anna! So that was nice, I was beginning to worry I wouldn't know anyone (besides Louis and Skye, of course) at the con.

Gabe and Tycho (or, Mike and Jerry) were REALLY, REALLY nice. First of all, I can't believe there was no line! (Granted, Friday the con looked deserted, but STILL. It's GABE AND TYCHO!) And they were really, really funny. Louis had mentioned how, when he met them earlier in the day, he had clammed up and not known what to say, and I had laughed at him, and of course, karma is a b^tch, so the same exact thing happened to me when I met them.

Doing my hair.
So, I walked up and said something like "I read your comic" (which as Skye pointed out, is the logical opener, so they must hear it all day), and they responded in perfect, clearly-rehearsed unison with something like "Thanks, we make it." Totally deadpan, like this was normal behavior. Skye had to walk a few steps away so she wouldn't die laughing in front of them while I was trying to continue the conversation. Anyway, I told them how much I liked the comic, and buy the books (I forgot the bring my books to sign, of course), and how we cosplayed them last year (I meant to bring print outs of pictures of our cosplay, so they could see), and then told them they should tell their wives that they have fans, and then it turned out their wives were there, so they introduced us (the girls were REALLY, REALLY nice, too!), and I told them how much I admired the work they did through Child's Play, and then I asked to see pictures of their sons, and oh my gosh their kids are so cute, and overall, I just had a really nice time meeting them. Gabe/Mike drew me a quick sketch, and then we decided to get out of there, because really, what was going to top that?
My new favorite photo.
