Otakon 2014

August 8 - August 10

Day One

Original Concept Sailor Mars

I have so few pictures of Otakon on Friday because I ran around so much! (A theme that was to continue throughout the weekend, but I learned my lesson on Friday and at least tried to snap a few more photos after that.) So this is going to be a little less detailed than other reports I've written, but I'll try to hit the highlights at least: I had a wonderful sleepover with Usa, who I hadn't seen in five years, and her friend Diego, who was incredibly nice and cooked us breakfast Friday morning. I had the fun of getting to see Sailor Moon walking down Metropolitan Avenue to greet me after I got my hair straightened. And we had an absolute blast listening to music on the drive down to Baltimore, which went rather well. We hit a bit of a snafu once we had arrived at the hotel; apparently, reserving a room with two queen sized beds in it isn't so much a "reservation" as "first come, first served", and we found out we were supposed to sleep four adults and one child in one bed. By making nuisances of ourselves, we at least got them to bring up two fair sized rollaway beds, which wasn't ideal, but at least no one was stuck on the floor or in the bathtub!

Usa and a high school friend

I unpacked and got dressed as quickly as possible, because the rest of Outer Power, Inner Beauty and David Ng were waiting on me (they always get in on Thursday night) to do our photoshoot. Usa changed into Eternal Sailor Moon (pun intended) and we headed for the convention center...Let me just say, it's been more years than I can figure that Usa and I last walked around in costume together, and I forgot just how wonderful it feels. It's not just the attention that she draws, she really does have this aura about her...sometimes when you're next to a girl who's much prettier than you are, you look worse in comparison. But walking with her is just the opposite; she's so pretty that everybody around her kind of basks in and reflects that beauty, and somehow looks like the best version of themselves. We only got a few pictures together that day, but I'm in love with absolutely every single one of them.

Jareth from Labyrinth!

I met up with the girls, Dave, and our friend Chris, in the convention center, and after exchanging ecstatic hellos and hugs, we decided to head out to do our photoshoot. Unfortunately, our fifth participant (and my other roommate!) was stuck in traffic, so it ended up just being the four of us after all, but as always, we had a fabulous time. The Original Designs may not ever be our favorite costumes, in part because some of them (I'm looking at you, Jupiter) are so goofy, but with the resurgence of Sailor Moon we were all on this wonderful happy high, and we had a ball.

Our Friday night dinner

Almost as soon as we were done shooting, we all headed back to our respective hotels (the girls and Chris and Dave were staying at one hotel, I was staying in another) and changed back into regular clothing, which set a new record of least amount of time spent in a costume at a convention for me, because we had been invited to have dinner with Avian Firefly's parents and siblings at this really cool place called the Lost City Diner on North Charles Street. The bus that would take us there was amazingly free of charge, but was running SUPER late. The diner itself was as adorable as Avi's dad had promised it would be; there are 1950s B sci-fi movie posters lining the walls (as well as other "retro space" décor such as rocket ships and tubular televisions), there are 1980s comics on racks that you can peruse at your leisure, and the bathrooms have old news bulletins piped in over the speakers. The service was incredibly slow, but to be fair, it was a Friday night, and we were a rather larger party than usual!

Loved this sidewalk chalk drawing outside one of the local stores!
After dinner, we decided to head back to our hotels and go to bed, because we wanted to be up early enough the next morning to attend the Sailor Moon photoshoot record attempt! I got back to room, saw that not only had Kitty and her daughter (my other two roommates) had arrived safely, but the sleeping situation had thankfully been straightened out (and I got to sleep between two beautiful women--my con experiences are AWESOME!), so all I really had to do was take off my makeup and get into bed.
Baltimore has come a LONG way in embracing Otakon

More Photos

I may have been a teensy bit fangirlish when I met Jareth.

More Photos (not taken by me)

My mom hates when I make this face--so of course I suggested we *all* make this face.
OPIB with their beloved photographer.
Gettin foods...
Selfies with three people are hard!
I can be counted on to make that exact derpy face when I talk. I don't know why.
Also, I like to bite people.
