I’ve never been particularly sporty, I’ve never really enjoyed exercise, I hated P.E at school, I always had a note with some excuse as to why I couldn’t do swimming (in my defense, my hair was very long, swimming in the morning and then having to spend the rest of the day with wet hair? No thank you, isn’t that how you catch chills?) I would try to get batted out early on in a rounders game in the Summer so that I could sit in the Sun and tan my face and when it came to sports day, I think it was compulsory that you signed up to compete in at least 3 events, I’d always choose the ones that would be over the fastest, the 100 metre sprint, long jump and well, actually, I don’t even remember what else.
Back as a teenager, I was blessed with a high metabolism so that and a vegetarian diet meant that I was pretty much still too small to fit in to the average Topshop or Miss Selfridge size 8 (size 6’s back then were harder to come by) so I didn’t really need an awful lot of exercise anyway.
These days, I do go to the gym, I don’t love actually doing the exercise but I go to keep in shape as more of a necessity and I do feel good afterwards.
With all this in mind, it would seem ludicrous if I were to tell you I’ve signed up for 2 5K runs next year wouldn’t it? Wouldn’t it???
Well ludicrous of not, that’s exactly what I’m telling you, along with a few of the other ‘Golden Ball’ girls from work I’m all signed up for a 5K Tough Mudder obstacle course in March at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – albeit without the mud and a 5K Colour Rush obstacle run in May in Brighton!
Training has started, the manager of my gym walked in the other day and actually had to do a double take, in 10 years, he’s never seen me set foot on the treadmill, and when I told him what I’m training for he chuckled, well I’ll show him!
I’m up to 2K today, I figure if I can be up to 5K by the end of the year and keep it up, I’ll be fine come March, then it’s just the obstacles I’ll have to work out how to tackle, and coming to think of it, I’ve never seen a fat runner so that will mean I won’t have to feel guilty about the amount of hobnobs I eat my way through!
I love the thought of my first run being at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, from the window in my apartment, I watched the Olympic village being built, the main stadium, the aquatics centre and the orbital all went up so quickly, they seemed to appear out of nowhere, then for the opening ceremony in 2012, my view of the fireworks was spectacular and during the Olympics, I also watched the athletes train on the open running training track.
