Skye hadn't been to New York Comic Con since 2009, and she was really jonesing to return--badly enough that *she* suggested a costume for us to do! (Our cosplay history usually consists of me shamelessly groveling and begging until she capitulates.) She had a sexy Mad Hatter costume that hadn't gotten much wear, and she knew I had an Alice in Wonderland costume of my own, so it should be an easy duo, right?

The *logical* thing to do would have been to wear the costume I already owned. Still acceptable would have been to buy a new sexy Alice in Wonderland costume, so that we matched. What I did instead was to buy an all new elaborate costume. See, ever since I had seen Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (which I had seen with Skye, come to think of it), I had been in love with every single costume she wears in that movie. I debated going with the red court dress, made out of the drapes when she's posing as Um in the palace of the Red Queen, and in fact that costume was commercially available and of pretty good quality, but finally I decided that her classic blue dress might be more recognizable. Plus, it was also commercially available--or so I thought.

Thank God for Amazon customer reviews; the licensed costume is absolute trash. The fabric was thin, scratchy, and see-through; the neckline and sleeves were completely different from the product photo, and the embroidery was only on the front half of the dress! So, I went looking online--and this costume is, surprisingly, not sold by a lot of the online cosplay sellers. The few places I did find it, it was either the wrong color (usually an obnoxious robin's egg blue) or embroidery is completely wrong (usually a generic trim sewn on, rather than the animals.) There were some perfect ones on Etsy, of course, but they were all $500 and up, which is a little more than I was willing to spend. Finally I found a great dress on Duokings; the color is perfect, I love the sheer overlay, and the embroidery appears to be screen accurate. I bought the Grace Classic wig in Dark Ash Blonde from Arda Wigs, and immediately shipped it off to Patti and Steph to put pin curls in it, and then trimmed the bangs a little myself. I was even able to find her spat-like boots for sale on Cosplay House(they have the boots, but not the dress, how odd is that?)

And then when we got to the con some guy immediately recognized Skye as the Mad Hatter, but thought I was Elsa. Oh, well.
