When I brought "my kid" (not my daugther, but still my kid) to her very first anime convention, she wanted to cosplay, because...she's my kid. She already had a My Hero Academia school uniform, so we went back and forth on who she should be before she settled on Ochaco Uraraka (which was lucky for me, because I had about a week to style a wig for her.) Since Firesketches was age appropriate to be a student, I didn't feel it would be right to be a student character along with her, so (not having ever seen My Hero Academia) I asked her to pick an adult female character for me to cosplay. None of the female teachers seemed appropriate (Midnight, in particular, seemed *very* inapprorpiate to cosplay while standing next to someone I consider "my kid"), but Firesketches thought I would make a good professional hero, one of the first introduced in the series: Mt. Lady. We didn't have a lot of time (we decided to attend AnimeNYC about two weeks prior), but luckily My Hero Academia is currently popular (unlike all of the other series I cosplay, which are either obscure, antiquated, or both) so I was able to have a choice of several premade costumes to buy. I found one made by Miccostumes, and it had two recommendations going for it: one, it involved not only the costume but the mask and the horns, as well as carrying a suggested wig, and two, guaranteed delivery before the con. Honestly, I put more work into styling Firesketches' Uraraka wig than into anything for my own.

I'll be honest: I probably wouldn't have watched My Hero Academia on my own, as it's been three years since I saw something current (and that time was only because Yuri on Ice was so short, and just about everywhere), and I probably wouldn't have cosplayed Mt. Lady. But MHA is actually a pretty fun show, it seems to pay loving homage rather than outright satirize heroic tropes. And this is a well made costume, and it's been a long time since I put on a domino mask, I felt like a real superhero. And I have to admit it was nice for about 80% of the attendees to recognize who I was supposed to be for once. But, by far, the BEST part of cosplaying Mt. Lady was having my kid cosplaying by my side. Dressing up as an old pro showing the ropes to the next generation was perfect for both of us.
