When I ended up more or less reluctantly buying a four day pass to NYCC 2015, I knew I would want to cosplay all four days (I've been to a con in regular clothes, it's not as much fun for me), but I also knew I didn't want to buy anything new, and I would want to be comfortable, either the first or last day. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm absolutely in love with the red wig I bought from Arda for Steampunk Batgirl, and look for any excuse to wear it. Plus, after years of me teasing my friend Pete that he should give cosplay a try, he finally gave Tony Stark a try in 2013 (the one year I didn't go!) and got hooked, so I figured, why not Black Widow in her disguise as Stark's assistant, Natalie Rushman? I had the wig, I have a closetfull of white shirts and black pants, and I could borrow a clipboard from work. Easy!

Well, except, all of the short sleeved white shirts I own are left over from my Catholic high school days, so they're cut as unisex as possible, making them super-boxy on me, so I hunted all over the internet to try to find a fitted one with a bit of stretch to it. Then I decided that the wide leg black pants I already own had too high of a waist, so I bought another pair from K-Mart. Then I couldn't find my wide black belt, so--you guessed it, only Macy's this time. My "cheap and easy" costume ended up costing me more money than I had anticipated--but hey, at least I can wear the pieces to work. Pete agreed to wear Tony on Sunday, which was good because after three days of being in full costume, I was just about done. This was way more comfortable. I may not do this version of Black Widow again (no one really knew who I was unless I was with another Avenger, and sometimes not even then), but considering how much I love this wig, I'll probably end up doing other versions for that reason alone. |
