New York Comic Con 2012

October 12 - 14

Day Three

Lara Croft

Sunday morning we allowed ourselves to sleep in a little (we were tired!) and allowed ourselves a little extra time to get ready--not only is Sunday generally the quietest day of the con, but I was going to need all of my courage in order to leave the house dressed as Lara. (I threw a skirt on over the teeny shorts to make sure we wouldn't be attacked on the subway.) I swear, every time I unpack that costume, I hold the shorts up in front of my face and say, doubtfully, "There ain't ANY way these are going to fit on my body." But, so far, they always have.
So many people were taking pictures of me, I wanted Louis to take one too.

I wasn't as secure as I would have liked--I had kind of quit working out after Otakon (because that's always a stellar idea) and, you know, the whole hair-still-black thing. But Louis assured me I looked just fine, and honestly, upon arriving at the Jacob Javits Center I think we made it about 30 feet before a mob of people with cameras descended upon us. I've never seen anything like it, except maybe at the organized group Sailor Moon shoots at Otakon. It was absolutely insane--I wish I had asked Louis to take a picture of the photographers!

Athena-chan and Carrie as Supergirl and Wonder Girl

Our usual mission on the last day of any con is to scour the Dealer's Room for any "Everything Must Go!" sales. During our browsing we found Athena-chan as Supergirl and Carrie as Wondergirl manning their booth together. They looked SO CUTE! I'm sorry we didn't see them until Sunday, they're always wonderful girls to spend time with.

Lady Wolfwood!
Sunday is also the day that kids between the ages of 6 and 12 can attend for a discounted ticket price (and kids under 6 get in free--hey, we know we have to start indoctrinating them young!) Being able to walk around and see all of the absolutely adorable kids in their absolutely adorable costumes is endlessly entertaining--and the kids who really get into character are the absolute best.
Evil Princess Harley Quinn!
Since I was dressed as Lara Croft, we also decided to walk over to the Tomb Raider Experience, an archery range set up to promote the new Tomb Raider game coming out in March of 2013. It took us a while to find it--it was in the hallway that leads to the North Pavillion--and by the time we got there, the line was LONG. I enjoy archery; we took it in gym when I lived upstate (because that's a great idea, give a bunch of hyperactive pre-pubescents only slightly blunted pointy things and turn them loose outside), but not that much (plus, my father owns a bow and arrows himself) so we decided to keep walking.
Adam, Louis, me, and CHris

"Hey, Lara!" I heard. I turned around and a guy with a clipboard at the front of the line was waving at me. "Why don't you give it a try?"

"The line's too long!" I shouted back.

"Not for you!"

Twice in one weekend! I've never been so flattered--I imagine this is what normal people must feel like when they get past the bouncers at clubs. Unfortunately, it's been a good two decades since the above-mentioned gym classes, and I was abominable. Every participant got to take their target home, and every time I look at it I get the urge to go outside and practice.

Rawr! We are scary zombies!
After I was done failing spectacularly at shooting thing, who should we run into but Fory-san! I wasn't doing very well at meeting up with people this convention, so I'm especially glad I got to see him, since we live so far apart and we don't get to get together very often. We only had time for one photo before he had to take off, but I'm grateful for even that much!
ZOMBIES!
We also ran into CHris at the same time, and it was he who unwittingly came up with Ed's new nickname. We mentioned that we were looking for our friend Ed dressed as Deadpool, and CHris quipped, "You mean, Edpool?" Louis and I looked at each other with our mouths open. We were ashamed that we hadn't come up with that ourselves. It's so perfect! Louis has refused to call Ed anything other than Edpool ever since.
Oh no! More zombies!
Not long after that, we met up with David Ng outside of the con to do a photoshoot as Lara Croft, and then took him and Edpool with us to a local diner to grab some lunch. Edpool didn't want to get the undersides of his boots dirty (since they're part of the fabric of the bodysuit), and ended up tying plastic bags around his feet while we were walking along 11th Avenue. Only in New York, ladies and gentlemen.
Why won't anyone help me?!?

More Photos (None taken by me)

Vash the Stampede and Lara Croft...pretty dangerous duo.
