Day Three
Lily McGuire
|
As would be expected, Sunday morning was a combination of getting ready to go to the con, and getting ready to leave the con. I packed, I had breakfast, I packed, I changed into Lily, I packed, and I brought my bags down to the lobby. I gave my bags to the staff who, since I was parking with the hotel anyway, offered to pop them into my trunk for me, and I checked one big bag that had my "going home" outfit, as I didn't feel like trying to drive in a full skirt and petticoat ensemble. With that out of the way, I headed to the convention center with one major goal in mind: Find a Terry Bogard. Granted, I am *always* on the lookout for a Terry Bogard, but I had a special reason on this day; I have worn Lily twice before, and never gotten to take a picture with a Terry. I was hoping to rectify that.
I went to the Games Room first, both on the off-chance I'd get to see Nick ( I did not), and because I thought since Terry was originally and primarily a video game character, maybe a video game cosplayer would be playing video games? No dice. I made a full tour of the room, and then thought that maybe taking a walk around the convention center would bring me better luck. Still nothing. It was getting close to 11 AM, and my last shoot of the con with Dave, so I went to meet him at the Henley Park hotel.

Dave hadn't seen the Fatal Fury OVAs in several years--in fact, he hadn't even *heard* the TERM "OVA" in several years, we are SO OLD--so we threw some ideas back and forth about where we wanted to shoot. We went first to the Marriot lobby, but we had used it three times already, so while it would work, it was lowest on our list. The temperature had dropped enough that it was comfortable enough to shoot outside, so we took a walk out there, but the federal buildings didn't really go with Lily's character. I described the scenes that she's wearing this outfit in while we walked, and slowly came to the realization that there was a small sitting room directly off the lobby of the Henley Park hotel that would work really well...so we ended up going back the way we came. Ah well. As I said, it was surprisingly nice out, after the scorching temperatures we had endured Friday and Saturday, and a little Vitamin D never hurt anybody.
We asked the Henley Park hotel staff for permission, and they said that since I was a guest it would be no problem at all. Dave worked his magic, and despite saying that he didn't remember Fatal Fury all that well, I think he did a marvelous job of capturing Lily's "bird in a gilded cage" motif. |

The craziness of trying to check out of the Marriott Sunday morning |
|
After we were done shooting, I walked with Dave back to the Marriott to meet his next subject, his friend and padawan, Anna. After seeing them off, I texted the girls to see what they were up to, and they were in the Dealers Room, so I went to join them. I hadn't seen more than a few aisles of it the day before, so I enjoyed walking around with Lauren and Stevie and Teren and Alyce and Beth. I even ended up making one last purchase; Bas and Reinii had both bought from The Leggings Lass, and I think all of us were impressed with just how soft the fabric that they used was, so a bunch of us ended up buying *something* (I got myself Care Bears shorts, because I am perpetually six years old.)
And then I saw it. That familiar red hat, that familiar red jacket. I walked over to him. "Terry?" And he turned around.

Anna and Dave |
I did it! Finally, five years after getting this costume, I finally got a Terry Bogard! And, naturally, he didn't know who I was. (I tried "dying" at his feet to see if that rang any bells, but no dice.) Sigh. It's all right; I get that most people know him from the King of Fighters video game, I get that the OVA is older than most of the attendees these days. But the guy was nice, and posed for a few pictures with me, and I was able to go home happy. And I'd like to say I'm not "done" yet; now that I have one picture with a Terry, why not see if I can't find one who would join me in a photoshoot someday? Well, we'll see.
Alyce and Beth had split off to do their own thing at some point, so it was just Stevie, Teren, Lauren and I, and Stevie was feeling a bit tired, so she left to go sit down. I wasn't feeling tired myself, exactly, but after a few more aisles, I was feeling...something. Faint? Not exactly overheated, but not well. Lady Terentia got concerned about me, and even moreso when she found out I hadn't had any water in a while (did you ever try going to the bathroom wearing a full length, full width petticoat? It can't be done) and wasn't planning on eating until I got back to New York, so we went to join Stevie and I had a not-half-bad Italian sub and a Diet Coke AND a water. I'm not sure if it was the water, the food, or just getting to sit down for a bit, but it did make me feel a lot better--unfortunately, by the time I finished, it was time to leave.

So many people wanted to take a picture with the Next Life people! |
|
So Teren walked me back to the Henley Park hotel, and watched my stuff while I went down to the bathroom to change, and just before I left, stuck a little book in my bag and told me to look at it when I got home. I don't need to get into specifics but the long and the short of it is that my friends were very glad I was there. And then I had to drive five and a half hours to get home, but that's life.
So what's my takeaway? Well, I maybe still feel a bit old, but I did say that if I got one photo of myself that I liked, that I would be encouraged to keep going, and so far I've already seen two. I still think my friends won't *really* understand until it starts happening to them, but if that's the case, what's the harm in hanging around until then? Is my pride really stronger than my desire to run around and have fun with my friends? It may come to that someday, but right now, overall I'm glad it didn't yet.
