After walking ten blocks in heels the previous year as Steampunk Senshi, before we were even finished with our photoshoot, the girls of Senshi in the City agreed that the next year, we wanted to do a look with comfortable shoes! I think we settled on the Pokémon Trainer designs by Samantha Russell in a matter of five minutes. They'd be relatively easy, cheap, and most important, COMFORTABLE. And I owned a pair of black thigh highs, and a vest, and had bought a gold bangle for my Sailor Mars - cheongsam costume for Otakon, so the outfit was already like 30% done!
Ha ha ha no. Yes, I have a plain black vest, but I didn't have a plain black vest that had an inverted "v" at the bottom, and as I've said elsewhere, in my opinion the "plainer" a costume is, the more important the details are. So I hunted around until I found a relatively good one on Amazon, which I ordered--and though I had ordered a medium, a 3XL came, so I had to send it back, and order another one. And while I *know* I own black thigh highs, I couldn't find them the week or so before the con, so I ended up having to run to Elegance in Penn Station to buy another pair to make sure I'd have them in time.

I found a really adorable scalloped tube top at Forever 21--I've always said I'm too top-heavy to wear a tube top, but this one fits so well I may have to re-examine my prejudices. And while the bustle I made for our steampunk group the year before taught me I can, in fact, sew if I really need to, I wanted the gradiation of the color to be just perfect, so I commissioned Steph and Patti to make the scarf for me. I was actually most worried about the skirt--where was I going to find that exact boxed ruffle hem?--but a seller on eBay had a *perfect* pair of skorts, which was even better. My entire Pokémon senshi plus Lady Terentia helped me search high and low for the boots--Teren actually found a great pair that I jumped on, but then seller messaged me to say that her last pair were damaged and the rest were sold out, and I couldn't find anything else with that stirrup strap, so I had to settle for plain old pink and white galoshes. I bought a pack of silver slap bracelets from Windy City Novelties (I meant to give away the other ones, but never got around to it), and I found a great duffel bag (you can really never have too much luggage) from Opentip.com and Sharpie'd on the circles myself. As we were working on our costumes, the other senshi decided they also wanted to carry around at least one of their Pokémon, and while those girls went nuts and made their own plushies from scratch (really!) I was lucky enough to find a licensed Ninetails on eBay. They also made us all Pokéballs in our senshi's colors! So a lot more work went into this costume than I had anticipated.
But hey! At least I had the gold bangle already! |
