Otakon 2018

August 10 - August 12

Day Three

Umi Ryuuzaki - OVA School Uniform

Woo! Third day of the con! Boo! Last day of the con. :(
Well, yeah.
I did my usual--breakfast downstairs, then slowly getting dressed while also packing up all of my stuff. I brought it downstairs, intending to just throw my bags right into the car...only to find that they had, FINALLY, valet parked my car. Of cours ethey did. So I checked my bags, checked out of the hotel, and decided to take a solo trip through the convention center, to get photos for my con report, and Street Passes for my 3DS.
The fabulous LED screens used by the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

There weren't as many cosplayers on Sunday (as per the usual) but I did get to see a few, as well as Lyn and Rae looking adorable as always. I was wearing Umi Ryuuzaki's school uniform from the OVA to match Lady Terentia and Arlette, and we were supposed to meet at noon in the Marriott lobby, but just as I got there, I received a text message from her in a panic--there had been a mishap with the spirit gum she was using to secure her hand gem to the back of her hand, and she had spirit gum all over the front of her dress! Alyce had met me in the lobby (she had volunteered to be our photographer for our shoot), but she received the same text message at the same time, so she ran to the girls' hotel rom to see if she could help. I know less than nothing about spirit gum, so I decided to hold the fort.

Lyn and Rae!

Thankfully, after trying a few things, Alyce suggested using the special liquid eye makeup remover Terentia uses, which worked like a charm! So we met up at 12:30 instead of 12, no huhu.

I love cosplaying Magic Knight Rayearth with Arlette and Terentia, they're both such huge fans of the series. I think Fuu is Lady Terentia's favorite character of all time, and Arlette in particular was looking forward to this group because she loves the OVA so much. (And she makes a great Hikaru because she's so tiny; I'm of average height myself but I'm taller than she is.) Alyce had spotted a park not too far from the convention center, so we decided to head there for our photos.

Excel and Hyatt from Excel Saga! I haven't thought about that anime in ages...

Avian Firefly met us at the park to be our bag holder and Alyce's photography assistant, and with all of us working together I think we got some really beautiful photos--I'm happy with them, at any rate. We also saw some activists who were there to protest the "white civil rights rally" that was happening at the same time as (but, thankfully, nowhere near) Otakon, and Avi went over to thank them for speaking up. (Side note: we hear later that the rally was severely underattended. There were some articles published later that said the white rights activists were unable to get any hotel accommodations, due to all the Otakon attendees. If that's true, I'm happy to have done my part.)

After our shoot was done, we decided to take one last trip through the dealer's room, and after some searching we were able to find the booth that Teren had spotted the Ami figurine in on Friday, and made her purchase. I was sorely tempted to get the matching Rei figure, but in truth I want the whole set (to decorate my house for spring every year!) and I know it's available on Amazon, so I decided to wait. Reiini joined us so we could take our annual OPIB pic. We have been cosplaying together for twelve years now, and every year I marvel over how well we mesh. I am truly, incredibly lucky.

OPIB!
I knew I'd have to get gas and factor traffic into my trip home, so I left a little earlier this year than the year before. The girls walked me back to my hotel room and guarded my bags while I changed in the bathroom, and the valet brought my car around in short order. My last view of Washington D.C. was my powerful and beautiful girlfriends seeing me off with love.

I find it funny we all know the sign language alphabet
In my defense, I only took a break to call Grandpa because Arlette was on the phone with her grandma.
